Pet Insurance – Costs and Options

Rising veterinary costs have made it mandatory for pet lovers to go for pet insurance. But it is not the only reason for doing so. Pet Insurance is required for many reasons. Will you like to take a chance with your pet?

Why’s of Pet Insurance
Isn’t your pet an integral part of your family? Pets are usually naughty and careless. You may be keeping an eye on them but is that enough? Based on a survey, one out of every two pets meets an accident or develops an illness that may require veterinary treatment. The average cost to visit a vet is quite high and cannot be budgeted for. Hence pet insurance becomes a must. And what more, there are certain covers that protects one from unseen and weird eventualities related to the pet.

Different Options Are Available
Once you take the wise decision of insuring your pet then the second thing that shall come to your mind is what kind of policy will be suitable? There are various options covered in policies. Some of them are –

• Life Cover
Life cover is offered by many insurers. In a lifetime cover the insurer doesn’t increase the price with age and guarantees conditions for the whole life of the pet.

• Pay Out Limits
Insurers may limit their payouts on a yearly basis or on per-condition basis. However the former is a better option. In case of the latter, if the illness is prolonged the insurers may stop paying for the rest of the treatment as their per-condition limit may expire.

• Hereditary Conditions
Some policies do not include hereditary diseases/conditions for treatment. Some also exclude congenital diseases. One must check for the same.

• Excesses
There are some policies with the option of changing excess level where you are supposed to pay a part of the claim. It is always better to fix that amount rather than fix a percentage of the total claim.

• Dental
Some policies also include dental treatment but to avail this one has to take the pet for regular check ups.

When one is going for it then one must divulge complete information on pet’s medical history. A policy once taken has to be stuck onto for a long time. One must be aware of all relevant facts related to it. If you take up a wrong policy, the whole exercise of taking pet insurance goes futile.
